A congressman revives the proposal to rename Dulles Airport to Trump Airport

Congressional Republicans have once again pushed for the renaming of Dulles International Airport to President .

Addison McDowell, a North Carolina Representative, introduced H.R. Last Thursday, January 23, H.R. 691 was introduced to designate ‘s airport as Donald J. Trump International Airport.

McDowell stated in a release that “we have entered a golden age for America, largely because of President Trump’s leadership.” It is only fair that two of our greatest presidents, who have had the honor to serve our great nation, should give their respect and honor to the two airports serving Washington Dulles.

The resolution, which was sent to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure last year, is identical to that. is one of the four co-sponsors for McDowell’s proposed , along with Reps. Brandon Gill, , and Brian Jack, all Republicans from Georgia.

After faced long odds, in 2024, this proposal’s prospects of success might have improved with its honoree in the White House, and Republicans controlling both chambers in Congress, although with a 4-person majority in House.

The Democratic congressmen of Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, where Dulles Airport lies, are opposed to the idea of naming an important component to the region’s and transportation network after a man who, among other things, aims to shrink the federal government.

In a statement by Rep. , referring specifically to Trump’s Florida residence and resort, Connolly stated that “when Republicans first tried to name Dulles in honor of Donald Trump, I suggested it would be better for the federal nearest Mar-a-Lago, to bear his names.”

Rep. Suhas Suramananyam, who was elected November 2024 in ‘s Tenth Congressional district to replace Jennifer Wexton, suggested that his colleagues should focus their energies on other issues.

House Democrats have spent the last 4 years renaming a variety of post offices within the country. Within Suhas’s own district, there is a war raging about renaming of schools. One of which Suhas has not stepped into to offer his own opinion on the matter. Schools plans to spend millions of dollars renaming several schools, but there has been no comment by Suhas Suramananyam.

Dulles International Airport was opened in 1961. It is named for John Foster Dulles who established U.S. foreign policy under President Dwight Eisenhower as Secretary of State. Washington Dulles International Airport was officially named in 1982 to avoid confusion by travelers.

Washington National Airport, a controversial move, was renamed after a campaign launched by the conservative group Reagan Legacy Project. Americans for Tax Reform. Bill Clinton, then president of the United States, signed the law renaming the airport on Reagan’s birthday in 1998. This was despite protests by Democrats and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association regarding Reagan’s 1981 firing of 11,000 strike-breaking air traffic controllers.
