Attorney General Announces 353 Million for Virginia in Meta Child Safety Settlement

Attorney General Jay Jones announced a proposed $17 billion multistate settlement with Meta that guarantees Virginia $353 million and mandates sweeping child-safety changes on Instagram and Facebook.

According to the Office of the Attorney General, Meta must impose a combined two-hour daily time limit for children with mandatory pauses, block access from midnight to 6 a.m., curb school-day push notifications, strengthen age assurance, limit beauty filters and visible like counts, and improve parental controls. An independent auditor and settling states would monitor compliance.

Jones said the agreement addresses claims that Meta designed addictive features, exposed young users to mental-health harms and misled the public. The deal also resolves related claims tied to sharing nonpublic Facebook data with third parties such as Cambridge Analytica, with an additional $11 million for Virginia on that track.

The settlement remains subject to approval by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and includes dozens of states and territories.
