Central Virginia Authority Funds New I-64 Exit to Ease Short Pump Congestion

The Central Virginia Transportation Authority approved about $63 million toward a new Interstate 64 interchange at North Gayton Road intended to relieve West Broad Street congestion in Short Pump, the Henrico Citizen reported.

The diverging-diamond project would create a new exit serving western Henrico's commercial corridor and is part of a multi-year package that planning documents put near $157 million overall when other sources are included. VDOT is administering the work under UPC 128623.

Authority votes in July and August locked in the regional share after years of local advocacy for an alternate interstate access point. Construction timelines discussed in regional materials point to a late-decade build, with relief aimed at one of the Richmond area's most congested suburban corridors.

Henrico leaders have tied the interchange to continued growth around Short Pump retail, offices and neighborhoods that now funnel heavy traffic onto West Broad.
