Dominion and NextEra Pitch Downtown Richmond Office Tower Tied to Merger
Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy said they will build a new office tower next to Dominion’s 600 Canal Place headquarters if regulators approve their proposed $67 billion merger.
The site at 701 E. Cary St. has been a vacant gravel lot since Dominion’s former tower was imploded in 2020. Rendering details resemble an earlier 17-story, roughly 900,000-square-foot concept Dominion shelved in 2021. The companies call the building part of a combined co-headquarters paid by shareholders.
Monday’s package also extends average residential bill credits to four years at about $10 a month, maintains Dominion’s Virginia headcount for five years, and pledges 600 additional NextEra jobs plus supplier growth. Clean Virginia argued the late benefit package shows the original application was incomplete.
Mayor Danny Avula called the promises encouraging while saying the city will keep monitoring. The State Corporation Commission begins hearings in November.
