Fairfax Supervisors Pause New Flock Camera Installations Pending Review

Fairfax County supervisors voted unanimously Sept. 15 to pause installation of new Flock Safety license-plate readers after hundreds of resident emails raised privacy concerns.

The pause lasts until the board’s Safety and Security Committee meets Oct. 20. It does not affect 84 licensed stationary Flock cameras already operated by Fairfax County Police. Chair Jeff McKay said no new installs were planned this month, so the county faces no contractual penalties.

McKay called the cameras a public-safety benefit that has helped solve more than 1,600 cases since a 2022 trial, but he sent Flock’s CEO detailed questions on data ownership, out-of-state sharing and AI search tools. Advocacy group DeFlock Fairfax dismissed the pause as performative and wants a full ban.

School Board member Kyle McDaniel plans a Sept. 24 motion to bar ALPRs on school property. Arlington ended its Flock program the same day; Alexandria leaders have also signaled support for ending their contract.
