Fairfax Supervisors Restore High School Crossing Guard Funding After Rally

Fairfax Supervisors Restore High School Crossing Guard Funding After Rally

Fairfax County supervisors on Sept. 15 voted to restore crossing-guard coverage at 10 public high schools after a rally and more than three hours of public comment.

The board unanimously approved a fiscal year 2026 carryover package that includes $707,908 and 11 full-time police positions to cover 11 crossings at Annandale, Centreville, Chantilly, Edison, McLean, Oakton, South County, South Lakes, West Springfield and West Potomac through the rest of fiscal year 2027.

Chairman Jeff McKay said coverage will mix uniformed officers and private contractors. Police had already revived temporary service after a South Lakes student was struck Sept. 1. At least four other Fairfax County Public Schools students have been hit by drivers this month, including a 13-year-old killed while biking near Fair City Mall.

Before the funding vote, supervisors voted 10-0 to create a joint working group with the School Board, VDOT and county transportation staff aimed at broader school-zone safety ideas for the fiscal year 2028 budget.

School Board member Melanie Meren told the rally supervisors had been sleepwalking on child safety. Several school board members thanked the restoration but called for permanent funding that does not hinge on annual carryover fights.
