Fluvanna County Edgewood Apiaries Opens Retail Space at Stony Point Fashion Park
Stony Point Fashion Park is getting some added buzz by way of a new tenant from Fluvanna County.
Edgewood Apiaries, which makes honey and beeswax products on a 100-acre farm in Bremo Bluff, recently opened the doors on a retail space and a second production facility within the RVA Food Co-Lab at the South Richmond mall.
This is the first Richmond-area production facility and first-ever permanent retail space for the apiary, which since 2021 has kept its bees and production at the Fluvanna farm about 60 miles west of Richmond.
Edgewood now produces all of its beeswax and honey-based personal care products and herbal supplements in the 1,600-square-foot Stony Point space. It moved into the mall earlier this year and opened its storefront to shoppers in recent weeks.
Customers won’t hear any buzzing from the back rooms, as the apiary’s honey production remains in Fluvanna. Yet company founder and Powhatan native Amanda Sweeney said the expansion to Richmond provides opportunity to make larger batches of products and a permanent retail space for Richmonders to come shop.
Sweeney started the farm five years ago, after moving with her family back to Virginia from the West Coast. She told BizSense that, after several decades in the corporate world at companies like Nike and Petco, she wanted a change and felt that bringing her family back to her home state would help.
Sweeney comes from a long line of Virginia farmers. Her extended family has farmed in-state land for over 10 generations, and she herself grew up on a small Powhatan farm whose specialties were soybeans and corn.
With that farming family history and “a crazy love of honey,” Sweeney decided to try her hand at combining the two, and founded Edgewood Apiaries.
“This was really my opportunity to lean into something that I loved, and to settle into life as a mom of four running a farm,” she said.
Edgewood started off with 60 bee colonies and has grown from there, both in number of bees and financially. The company ended 2025 with over $400,000 in revenue.
Sweeney and a team of four employees make different varieties of honey like tulip poplar, sourwood and blackberry, and produce lotions, soap, shampoo bars, and candles made with honey, beeswax and propolis, a resin-like material bees also make.
The company late last year absorbed Powhatan-based business Wild Origins, bringing the business’ former owner and herbalist onto the Edgewood team and adding botanical personal care items and herbal supplements to the product lineSome of Edgewood’s products for sale in the Stony Point space.
Over the past five years, Edgewood has mostly sold its products at farmers markets in places like Powhatan, Norfolk, Charlottesville and Richmond, often popping up at Grow RVA in Bryan Park and South of the James at Forest Hill Park.
As the business has grown and added a botanical product line, Sweeney said it began to outgrow its farm-based production facility, which spans only 1,000 square feet across a 2-story building.
“The ability to move from one product line to the next and ensure all of the sanitation procedures are appropriately adhered to … we were just out of space,” Sweeney said.
Searching for another production facility space, first in Fluvanna County, Sweeney eventually heard of an open slot at the RVA Food Co-Lab, which provides space for multiple businesses to make and sell their goods.
Though an hourlong commute to and from the farm wasn’t ideal, Sweeney said the idea of having a permanent space to make products and sell them in a more populated area was attractive. She signed on.
Sweeney said she encourages customers to come in during retail hours to watch her and her team make the products, which she feels will bring “transparency” to shoppers.
She added that she hopes the new store will encourage Richmond honey lovers to shop local.
“A lot of people have no clue that the state only produces at most 5% of statewide demand (for honey) for 8 million people who live here,” Sweeney said. “So, to have an apiary that’s got its products readily available to the Richmond area, that’s huge. It’s like bringing the honey farm to Richmond.”
The new Stony Point store is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and by appointment.
The company has a team of eight people total. Sweeney said she hopes to hire another Richmond local to work at the Stony Point production facility.
RVA Food Co-Lab opened in Stony Point in 2024 as an allergen-free collaborative space for food, beverage and wellness companies to work. The space houses other tenants such as caterer The Green Kitchen and kefir maker Owl Spoon.
Elsewhere in Stony Point, anchor tenant Saks Fifth Avenue is set to close its department store in the mall in April as part of the luxury retailer’s ongoing bankruptcy.
Other new arrivals to the mall include restaurant Corozon Mexicano.
