Glenn Youngkin Announces Homestead Creamery Expansion in Franklin County

Governor Glenn Youngkin announced that Homestead Creamery Inc. will invest more than $2.5 million to renovate and expand its Franklin County production facility, adding ice cream capacity and committing to buy nearly $1.9 million in Virginia-produced cream over three years.

The Burnt Chimney company plans a new ice cream production room, equipment, refrigeration and freezers to meet demand for its premium churned ice cream. The expansion is expected to create two jobs and deepen Homestead’s purchases from Virginia dairy farms supplying its A2A2 milk.

Youngkin tied the project to Virginia Dairy Month and Virginia Agriculture Week. Agriculture Secretary Matthew Lohr said Homestead was the first recipient of an Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Facility Grant in 2012 and is returning for another grant. Homestead Controller Jesse Novak credited state agencies and Franklin County for supporting the work.

Founded in 2001, Homestead makes milk, ice cream, eggnog and other products from local dairy farms. Its products are sold in about 100 Virginia stores, while its ice cream is available in 29 flavors across 13 states and Washington, D.C.

Franklin County Board Chair Ronnie Thompson said the investment will support the local dairy industry. Del. Will Davis and Sen. William Stanley also praised the company’s continued commitment to the county. Youngkin approved a $20,000 AFID grant, matched by Franklin County, alongside the company’s much larger private investment.
