Henrico Approves Speed Cameras for All High Schools and Two Middle Schools
Henrico supervisors unanimously approved a plan Sept. 8 to place LIDAR speed cameras in school zones at all nine high schools and at Tuckahoe and Fairfield middle schools by the end of the year.
After a 30-day warning period, Henrico Police will begin enforcement early next year. Cameras will photograph vehicles traveling 10 miles per hour or more over the limit while school-zone lights flash, capturing the rear of the vehicle and license plate. Validated violations bring a $100 fine by mail within 30 days.
Police Chief Eric English said the long-term goal is to expand cameras to nearly all county schools, though some quiet neighborhood elementary sites may not need them. Supervisors also want to discuss extending flashing school-zone hours for major after-school events such as football games.
Brookland Supervisor Dan Schmitt said protecting people crossing streets should outweigh mixed resident reactions. Fairfield resident Victoria Crawley supported cameras but said Azalea Avenue near Henrico High still needs more safeguards after a 2024 pedestrian fatality.
English said the LIDAR systems are not linked to Flock Safety cameras, images go only to the vendor and police, and unused images are deleted after 21 days.
