Henrico Schools Face More Than 600 Open HVAC and Facility Work Orders

Henrico County Public Schools had 624 open HVAC and facility work orders when WWBT obtained records through FOIA, with more than half unresolved for over 30 days and 41 open more than a year.

Between July 1 and Sept. 1, crews logged 512 HVAC tickets and closed 175. Nearly a quarter of open tickets were marked deferred. Emergency air-conditioning tickets included special-needs classrooms at Hermitage High, Ashe Elementary and Rivers Edge Elementary; some elementary schools reported excess humidity and mold concerns.

New Chief of Operations Greg Dunaway said the work-order system is not a full and accurate accounting and needs major improvement after his August arrival. A new maintenance contract began Sept. 1, and a third-party facilities study plus internal dashboard were presented to the School Board on Sept. 10.

Teachers still report classroom temperatures in the 80s and 90s despite hundreds of spot coolers. County emergency management uses federal guidance treating indoor spaces at or above 84 degrees as a concern for prolonged exposure.
