Loudoun County School Board Approves LGBTQ+ History Month Proclamation-orig

Loudoun County Public Schools adopted a proclamation designating October 2026 as LGBTQ+ History Month.

The measure encourages staff, students, and the community to recognize the history and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community during the month and throughout the school year.

It highlights the district's commitment to equity, belonging, and an environment described as safe, supportive, inclusive, and affirming.

The Loudoun County School Board consists of nine members: Chair April Chandler representing the Algonkian District, Vice Chair Anne Donohue at-large, Deana Griffiths from Ashburn, Ross Svenson of Broad Run, Kari LaBell in Catoctin, Jon Pepper for Dulles, Lauren Shernoff from Leesburg, Sumera Rashid of Little River, and Amy Riccardi representing Sterling.

The proclamation references National Coming Out Day on October 11 and positions education as a means to foster understanding and reduce discrimination.

It affirms kindness, acceptance, and respect as foundations of the learning community while rejecting discrimination tied to gender identity, sexual orientation, or gender expression.

School officials have stated that the proclamation imposes no mandatory requirements on students or staff.

Some residents in the county have expressed disagreement with the district's focus on these topics, suggesting that core academic instruction should take precedence.

Discussions in the community have centered on the balance between school policies and family involvement in personal matters.

The proclamation notes partnerships aimed at promoting understanding and supporting all students and families within the division.

Loudoun County Public Schools serves a large and diverse student population, with recent graduation rates reported near 97 percent.

The board's action aligns with broader efforts in some districts to address historical contributions from various groups.

Observers note that similar proclamations have sparked debate in other jurisdictions regarding the scope of school involvement in social issues.
