Loudoun County School Board Votes 5-3-1 Against Elementary School Resource Officers Expansion
Public commenters urged the board to support Sheriff Mike Chapman’s proposal, citing national statistics on mass shootings. Research from the Crime Prevention Research Center reports that 94 to 98 percent of mass public shootings occur in gun-free zones, where armed resistance is prohibited. The speaker emphasized that perpetrators target such locations knowingly, advocating for SROs as essential protection for vulnerable students.
Sheriff Chapman has pushed for additional SROs to fill coverage gaps across the district’s schools. The board, including Chair April Chandler, Ross Svenson, Amy Riccardi, Deana Griffiths, and members representing the Algonkian, Ashburn, Blue Ridge, Broad Run, Catoctin, Dulles, Leesburg, Lovettsville, and Sterling districts, passed a motion supporting discussion but not immediate funding. Board members Amy Riccardi and Deana Griffiths appeared surprised by the prepared motion, suggesting limited prior coordination.
This follows a bipartisan Board of Supervisors action funding six new SROs as a temporary measure. Recent incidents, including a bomb threat evacuation at Eagle Ridge Middle School, highlight ongoing security concerns. Proponents of SROs point to their role in deterrence and rapid response, while opponents cite needs for transparent agreements.
The vote reflects broader debates on school safety post-high-profile incidents like Parkland and Uvalde, both in gun-free environments. FBI data has been critiqued for underreporting civilian interventions, with independent analyses showing up to 41 percent stopped by armed citizens. Loudoun’s decision leaves elementary SRO expansion in limbo pending further talks.
