Loudoun Supervisors Advance Proposed Yearlong Pause on New Data Centers
Loudoun County supervisors have advanced a proposed 12-month pause on new data center applications, with a final vote expected Oct. 13, FOX 5 reported after a board meeting.
County attorneys cautioned that an indefinite moratorium is not legal and that any temporary pause would apply only to new applications. Supervisors are also weighing how a pause could affect regional grid reliability while residents press for relief from facilities near homes, schools and backyards.
Tech facilities generate more than half of Loudoun's budget, according to local leaders, but neighbors say power demand is driving high-voltage lines too close to communities. Union electrical workers warned that freezing projects could jeopardize careers tied to powering the campuses.
Separately, supervisors Juli Briskman and Laura TeKrony are pushing to end a grandfather clause that still lets some older applications proceed by right after March 2025 zoning changes. Staff reports on that amendment are due for an Oct. 6 meeting.
