More Than a Dozen Southwest and Southside Schools Win State Construction Grants

The Virginia Board of Education approved more than $132 million in School Construction Assistance Program grants for 34 projects in 22 divisions, including awards tied to 16 Southwest and Southside schools.

Buena Vista will receive about $5.19 million, 30 percent of a planned $17 million renovation that shifts middle-grade students onto the Parry McCluer High School campus with separate instructional and support spaces plus a new gym, auditorium and wood shop. Superintendent Heather Ault said the project would be extremely difficult without state aid.

Lynchburg received about $9 million toward multiple elementary and middle school mechanical and architectural upgrades, a Sandusky Elementary roof and a Heritage Elementary gym. Since 2023 the state has awarded more than $750 million through the program created in 2022.

Separately, the Education Department announced $12 million in school security equipment grants to nearly 400 schools in 91 divisions. Roanoke County and Lynchburg were among eight divisions receiving the maximum $250,000 allocations.
