Richmond Secures 32.8 Million in State Funds for Water Plant Filter Upgrades

The Richmond Regional Water Workgroup approved $32.8 million in state funding for filter upgrades at the city's water treatment plant, Richmond BizSense reported in its Sept. 14 local government briefs.

City officials said the award is $12.8 million above a $20 million baseline and will support replacing media in 22 filters plus structural, architectural and electrical work meant to improve reliability and flow into the distribution system.

Funding was authorized in the 2026 state budget through amendments patroned by Del. Betsy Carr and Sen. Michael Jones. The legislature also created the workgroup, which partners with the Virginia Department of Health and Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico counties and began meeting in August.

Mayor Danny Avula and other officials toured the plant earlier this year as regional partners pressed for lasting improvements after recent water-system failures.
