According to the VDH, measles can be spread through the air by infected people when they breathe, cough, or sneeze. The symptoms of measles usually come in two stages. The first stage is characterized by a high fever (more than 101 degrees), a runny or watery nose, red, watery eyes and a cough.

Early symptoms begin seven to fourteen days after exposure. The second phase begins three to five day after the first stage, when the rash appears on the face. It then spreads throughout the body. The measles is contagious for four days before and four days after the appearance of the rash.
