The local police finally caught a man who they believe repeatedly spied in people’s homes.
Fairfax County Police Department reported yesterday (Thursday) that a 49-year old Idylwood man was arrested and charged with peeping in an occupied residence.
The first report of a peeping incident was made by a woman in the 2100 block Evans Court on April 9, 2024. She said that she had “observed” a man peering through her window. Seven other incidents occurred in the same block from April 11 to December 9.
Police said that all of the incidents took place between 5:40 a.m. and 6 a.m. The FCPD Sex Crimes Unit detectives determined that one person was responsible for all the incidents.
The FCPD said it made progress in the investigation after sharing images of surveillance footage on December 19, which showed the alleged defendant.
In a press release, the department stated that “on December 26 detectives made a breakthrough when a crime solvers tip regarding these cases was submitted.” The tipster had read an FCPD release in the previous month and provided detectives with information to identify the suspect.
Fairfax County Crime Solvers, a nonprofit organization run by community leaders and businessmen, collects tips to help the FCPD. You can submit anonymous tips by email or phone. According to the website, since October 1979, this program has helped with more than 1,917 arrests.
According to court records, the man arrested in the Idylwood Peeping Incidents was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and then released on his own recognizance. The arraignment will take place at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 14, followed by an adjudication hearing on February 24.
In Virginia, the charge for peeping in an occupied residence is classified as a class 1 misdemeanor, with a possible punishment of up 12 months in prison and a maximum fine of $2,500, if convicted.
