This route will involve the construction of approximately 185-foot tall power line structures passing through portions of the Loudoun Valley Estates subdivision in Ashburn. The decision addresses the need for additional electrical capacity driven by the expansion of data centers in the region.
Ashburn resident Vicky Hu, who has resided in her home for 20 years, participated in opposition efforts against the selected alignment. Hu and her family raised concerns about the visual and practical effects of the lines traversing their backyard property. The commission reviewed multiple route options before selecting the one that proceeds near existing homes to serve the power requirements of facilities including those operated by Amazon.
Data centers in Loudoun County represent a major component of the local economy, contributing to employment and tax revenues while supporting national digital infrastructure. The surge in electricity demand from these operations has prompted utilities to plan new transmission infrastructure. Dominion Energy has stated that the approved lines will enhance grid reliability and accommodate future growth in the sector.
The approval process included input from various stakeholders, including county officials and affected property owners. Following the ruling, Loudoun County Supervisors have discussed potential responses involving local entities such as the school board. Residents retain the option to seek further review through the court system, including appeals to higher judicial bodies.
Project specifications indicate the monopoles will exceed the height of prominent landmarks, raising questions about aesthetics and land use compatibility in suburban settings. The State Corporation Commission determined that Route 3A provided the optimal balance among engineering, environmental, and cost factors. Alternative paths considered during hearings were ultimately not selected.
