Loudoun County Schools Nutrition Fund Faces Projected $6.6M Shortfall

Loudoun County Public Schools has identified a projected operating loss of $6.6 million in the School Nutrition Fund for fiscal year 2026. The projection accounts for cost increases driven by personnel that continue to exceed revenue growth rates. Fewer serving days contribute to the shortfall by reducing revenue while fixed costs persist. The ending fund balance is expected to stand at $14.5 million following these adjustments.

A spend down plan from the previous year’s USDA allocations will bring the fund balance to a level equivalent to 2.3 months of expenditures. This measure is intended to stabilize operations in the short term. The net operating loss exceeds the earlier projection of $5.1 million. District reports indicate continued use of reserves to subsidize the program.

Cost reduction strategies are underway to mitigate the effects of the shortfall. These efforts focus on aligning expenses more closely with current revenue levels. The financial summary outlines the impact of school closures on daily participation and overall fund performance. Officials continue to review options for maintaining program viability.

The $6.6 million loss represents the difference between revenues and expenditures in the current fiscal outlook. Personnel expenses remain a key factor in the cost structure. Reduced serving days have a direct effect on income without proportional decreases in overhead. The fund balance projection incorporates these variables for planning purposes.

Implementation of cost controls aims to support long-term sustainability of the nutrition services. The district’s approach includes monitoring of both revenue sources and expenditure categories. This financial position reflects data from recent operational periods. Further details on specific measures will be developed in subsequent reviews.
