FCPD: Springfield Man Charged with Attempted Sexual Assault

Fairfax County announced yesterday that a man who attempted to sexually assault an elderly woman in the Springfield Crossing apartment complex late last month was arrested.

Department reports that officers were dispatched to the 6700 block of Metropolitan Center Drive on January 27 shortly after 2:30 am for a report about an attempted abduction and a reported abduction.

Unknown man approached a woman as she walked home, a woman reported to police.

In a release, the FCPD stated that the suspect grabbed the victim and tried to sexually assault her. “The victim ran and fought off the suspect. The victim suffered minor injuries.”

Police said that despite “saturating” the area around the man’s house, they were not able to locate him.

According to the FCPD’s Major Bureau, detectives from the Major Crimes Bureau developed a composite drawing, and after an investigation, they identified Yapheth Emiru (30) as the suspected suspect.

According to records from the General District Court, Emiru, who was arrested on January 31, was charged with attempted and stalking, as well as abduction with intent to defile the next day.

After a hearing on his bond yesterday, he remains in custody at County Adult Detention Center. The case will be heard at 2 p.m., on Saturday, May 7.

The FCPD stated that “Victim Specialists from our Major Crimes Bureau Victim Services Division” have been assigned in order to ensure victims receive appropriate resources and assistance.
