Salem City Council to discuss a $2 million capital improvement budget for schools

Salem City Council on Monday will review a request by the Salem School Division to allocate almost $2 million of unallocated reserve capital funds to the general, grant, capital projects, and reserve funds.

The agenda report stated that on October 14, the city board of education amended its budget for FY26 to include these funds in the division’s fund balance from FY25. The city must approve the division’s proposed allocations.

This is a breakdown of the money that will be spent:

  • School general fund: $55,136
  • Fund for school grants: $97.666
  • School Reserve Fund: $202,400
  • Fund for school capital projects: $1,627.636

The funding will be used to fund the following projects:

  • The local match of 20% for a $300,000 grant is provided by $60,000 as a local match.
  • Maintenance needs of $932,500, including roof repairs, boiler replacement, pump and air unit replacement, fan coil repair, and leakage repairs.
  • FlySense detectors that detect THC and vaping were replaced, along with door badge readers.
  • 696,671 dollars in instructional and divisional needs. This includes bleachers for Salem High School’s gym, playground equipment for G.W. Seating in the bandroom at Andrew Lewis Middle School. A walk-in freezer for culinary classes.

During Monday’s meeting, the council will discuss a variety of requests and concerns. The full agenda is available at. Salem City Hall is located at 114 N. Broad St., where the 6:30 p.m. session will take place.
