Now Hiring Sales Lead

Amazon has been identified as the end customer for new data center facilities under development by Starwood Capital in Herndon, Virginia. The project is located in Fairfax County at the Renaissance Technology Park. Amazon Data Services submitted documentation to the county regarding air permit applications for the sites. This confirmation comes from recent filings that detail plans for two specific buildings.

The addresses involved are 13860 Redskin Drive and 13876 Redskin Drive. These correspond to the initial structures in a planned four-building campus. The overall development targets 2.14 million square feet across the 60-acre park. Starwood affiliate RP Industrial Owner LLC has handled the site acquisition and redevelopment efforts.

Site History and Acquisition

Starwood purchased the Renaissance Technology Park property in June 2019. The acquisition price reached 134.1 million dollars. Previous structures on the land included warehouses constructed from the 1970s through the 1980s. Demolition permits for these buildings were filed in 2021 to clear the way for data center construction.

Building permit applications have progressed for the first facility at 13860 Redskin Drive. That application was submitted in December and approved in February. The second application for 13876 Redskin Drive followed in June and is still under review. These steps outline the standard regulatory pathway for such projects in the county.

Permit Applications and Technical Specifications

Amazon’s filings include requests for a minor New Source Review permit from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. The permits cover installation of 72 stationary engine generators and two transitory generators. These components support backup power needs for the data centers. The addresses align precisely with the Starwood redevelopment plans.

Starwood has also acquired adjacent land previously used as a sports facility. This additional property lies next to the main Renaissance site. Amazon maintains other data centers in Fairfax County, including locations along Westfax Drive and in Chantilly. Further developments by the company are noted in nearby areas such as Springfield.

Regional Context and Related Developments

The Herndon project adds to ongoing data center activity across Northern Virginia. Fairfax County reports detail Amazon’s existing operations in the jurisdiction. The company continues to expand its footprint through new sites and partnerships. Starwood’s efforts focus on transforming the industrial park into specialized facilities.

No comments were provided by the involved parties in response to inquiries. The filings provide the primary source of information on the end-user confirmation. This development proceeds alongside other infrastructure projects in surrounding counties.

The information remains based on county records and company submissions. Additional phases of the Renaissance Technology Park may follow the initial two buildings. The project timeline includes prior approvals for site work and ongoing reviews.

At this dangerous time for journalism in Virginia

We hope you appreciated this article. Before you close this tab, we want to ask if you could support All Virginia News at this challenging time for independent journalism in the Commonwealth.

Virginia is currently governed by a Democratic trifecta—Governor Abigail Spanberger in the Executive Mansion, Democrats holding majorities in both the House of Delegates and the Senate, along with key leadership positions held by figures such as Lt. Governor Ghazala Hashmi, Attorney General Jay Jones, House Speaker Don Scott, and others. In any period of one-party dominance, the risk of reduced transparency and accountability grows. A strong, independent press is essential to scrutinize those in power, regardless of party affiliation.

Across the nation and here in Virginia, press freedom faces real pressures: from political threats and regulatory actions to corporate influence and economic challenges that can compromise editorial independence. When government officials—whether in Richmond or Washington—attempt to shape coverage through pressure, investigations, funding decisions, or favoritism, it undermines public trust and democratic health.

All Virginia News exists to serve Virginia readers first. We are not owned by billionaires or large corporations with political agendas. Our commitment is straightforward: deliver factual, thorough reporting that holds every elected official accountable—Democrat, Republican, or independent—without fear or favor. We believe democracy functions best with a robust, independent press that provides Virginians the full picture, free from partisan spin.

What sustains us through these challenges is the direct support of our readers. A majority of our funding comes from individuals like you who value trustworthy, paywall-free journalism. Your contributions preserve our editorial independence and allow us to continue aggressive, non-partisan oversight of state government, policies, and their impact on Virginia families.

We know these requests are never as welcome as the reporting itself, but without reader support, this work simply could not continue. Of course, we understand that not everyone is in a position to contribute financially, and we remain grateful for your readership either way.

If you are able, please support All Virginia News today. All gifts matter, but recurring contributions are especially valuable as they help us plan and sustain our coverage long-term (and reduce the frequency of these appeals). It takes just a moment to give. Thank you for standing with independent journalism and helping protect a free press that serves all Virginians.
